Liebestraum No. 3 in A-Flat Major, S. 541/3
by Franz Liszt
An In-Depth Piano Course
This course offers an in-depth, step-by-step guide to mastering Liebestraum No. 3, one of Liszt’s most frequently studied works. Drawing on my long-term experience teaching this piece at an intermediate and advanced level, I address the most common technical, musical, and memorization challenges that students encounter.
The course is structured to help you build the piece securely, efficiently, and musically, without unnecessary tension or unreliable habits.
What this course covers
Memorization
You will learn a systematic approach to memorizing the piece using structural awareness, harmonic understanding, and motor consistency.
Technique and efficiency
The course focuses on achieving a singing legato, secure voicing, and effortless passagework through efficient hand organization and arm usage. I explain how to avoid overplaying, reduce fatigue, and maintain control in wide textures and demanding stretches.
Fingering
Detailed fingering solutions are demonstrated and explained, including alternatives for different hand sizes. Fingering choices are always linked to musical goals, not convenience alone.
Expressiveness and phrasing
We work on shaping long melodic lines, controlling rubato without distortion, and balancing intimacy with climactic intensity. I explain how to project depth and warmth without sentimentality.
Pedalling
Pedalling is treated as a central expressive tool. You will learn how to achieve clarity in harmonic changes, avoid blurring in dense textures, and support the melodic line with subtle pedal control.
Visual and learning setup
The course is recorded with a high-quality, four-camera setup, allowing you to observe in detail:
- finger work and hand positioning
- weight transfer and movement efficiency
- pedalling technique and timing
A fully annotated score is included, featuring my fingering, pedalling suggestions, and interpretative notes, so you can directly apply the concepts in your own practice.
Who this course is for
This course is designed for advanced students and pianists who want to move beyond a superficial reading of the piece and achieve a secure, refined, and expressive performance of Liebestraum No. 3.
