Bach for Intermediate Pianists
Six beautiful Bach pieces, arranged in order of increasing difficulty, to help you grow both technically and musically.
Overall
This course covers a wide range of essential piano topics: technique, pedaling, articulation, phrasing, dynamics, singing touch, ornamentation, and Baroque style. It’s designed to be a deep, inspiring journey for intermediate learners who want to bring more understanding and expression into their Bach playing.
Small Prelude in C minor BWV 934
We’ll focus on memorization and score analysis by simplifying the texture and seeing the underlying structure. You’ll learn phrasing, balance, a singing touch, and practical ways to play Bach’s embellishments. I’ll also give you clear fingering suggestions and a step-by-step guide for learning the piece.
Invention in F major No. 8 BWV 779
A perfect “working horse” for building dexterity and efficient technique. I’ll show you how to approach tricky passages, optimize your motions, and develop universal strategies for learning fast, articulated music like this.
Invention in B-flat major No. 14 BWV 785
Here you’ll learn how to see the bigger picture when analyzing and memorizing a piece. We’ll also explore how to bring out tenderness and musicality through subtle tone control and balance between the hands.
Prelude in E-flat minor (WTC I) BWV 853
One of Bach’s most hauntingly beautiful works. Though challenging, many intermediate pianists are drawn to it. I’ll guide you through practical exercises to get comfortable with its key of E-flat minor, introduce the basics of improvisation, and give you a detailed lesson on pedaling. As always, we’ll go bar by bar to make the learning process smooth and clear.
Bach–Marcello Adagio BWV 974
I’ll share my personal fingering and show you how to extract the harmonic skeleton to better understand the structure. You’ll also get pedal guidance and rhythm strategies for the more complex sections.
Prelude in D minor (WTC II) BWV 875
The most challenging piece in the course — dramatic and powerful. By the time you reach it, you’ll already have the skills to handle it confidently. A detailed step-by-step approach to fingering and technique optimization will help you get there.
